14 years ago I was pregnant living with my parents while my Husband was deployed to Iraq. Our previous dog had died of cancer and my parents had not been able to bring themselves to adopt a new dog. It wasn’t soon after I moved in that I realized it was time that our family needed a new dog in our lives. My father was so hesitant because the loss of our family dog had hit us so hard, so I was so surprised when my dad came home and said, I think I found a dog. My dad had stopped at the Front Steet Animal Shelter and discovered that a puppy had been abandoned just after Christmas. I will never forget the day we picked up our Mookie. We were the first ones at the doors and arrived probably way too early, but the excitement was overwhelming and waiting at the doors just seemed like the right thing to do. My dad came with his check in hand so excited. We anxiously awaited the be handed our new little guy. On the way home my dad said the sweetest thing. I’m holding this tiny puppy in my lap and he looks at me and says, “I haven’t driven this slow and cautious since I bought you home from the hospital”. I remember thinking how special this day was for my family. Mookie has brought such joy and happiness to our family. He was my mom’s sidekick all through her chemo, like he knew she needed him. Words can’t express how Mookie has changed our lives. He’s 15 years old now and although he’s gotten a little slower, he is still the best dog anyone could ask for. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Front Street…you guys have changed our lives for the better.
